From Authentic Movement to The Moving Relationship
The body holds the knowledge of the soul and allows us to experience what lies (still) beyond words and language. Through its impulses, gestures, and inner images, it reveals on a symbolic level what lies dormant in the unconscious. In this continuing education program, you will learn methods and practices that tap into this knowledge and bring it into experience and expression for your therapeutic or artistic work.
Authentic Movement emerged in the middle of the last century from the pioneering work of dance therapy. Mary Starks Whitehouse drew inspiration from C. G. Jung’s active imagination. Generations of Jungian analysts and dance therapists have since deepened their understanding of and explored this method.
At the ZOE SCHOOL, we have further developed it into “The Moving Relationship.” At its core is the relationship between the person moving, the “Mover,” and the person observing, the “Witness.” We combine this practice with insights from neuroscience on body awareness, interoception, and interpersonal resonance. This gives you a deep understanding of what happens in the movement and, consequently, in the relationship.
What You’ll Experience
As the “Mover,” you move with your eyes closed, following whatever wants to move from within. As the “Witness,” you practice observing in a nonjudgmental and present way. At the same time, you become aware of what stirs within you as you witness: an immediate access to resonance and countertransference. Painting, sculpting with clay, and intuitive writing help give form—and sometimes even language—to the experience before the mind organizes it. This is where transformation begins.
Imagination, Improvisation, and Interaction
Inner images become movement; movement becomes an encounter. The encounter has a direct effect on your own experience of movement across many levels of consciousness. You’ll learn how unconscious content can be accessed through dance improvisation. Drawing on your own experiences, you’ll learn to facilitate these processes with clients.
Rituals
Rituals give form to transitions and provide a framework for transformation. You’ll experience their power through the body and discover how ritualization strengthens therapeutic processes.
What You’ll Gain
- a deeper access to the unconscious through the body,
- confidence in the role of “witness”: present, non-judgmental, and receptive,
- methods for facilitating depth psychological processes through movement,
- a well-founded understanding based on neuroscientific insights,
- and, for dancers and choreographers, new sources of authentic expression and creative processes.
